What are the key elements of Scandinavian style?

  1. White. White is the primary color palette for Scandanavian design.  Due to long dark days, Scandinavians used a lot of white to let in as much light as possible, and keep it trapped. They do incorporate soft muted colors and bring in color through natural woods.
  2. Natural finishes. In Scandinavian style, natural elements are layered on top of the white to add dimension and interest.  Wood or stone is often used for flooring. The floors are then softly layered with rugs of wool, hemp, or sisal to add warmth and coziness to the Scandinavian home.
  3. Simplicity. Clean lines and clutter-free are two words that describe Scandinavian design.  They prefer to keep things simple and clutter-free in their homes.
  4. Create a statement. Scandinavians subscribe to the motto, “form over function.”  They believe in saving and purchasing an item to last, and to only bring in loved items into their home.

The perfect Scandinavian style Christmas color palette: soft neutrals

Shades of white, grey and soft neutral colors make up the traditional Scandinavian color palette. Once you have a base, layer in natural colors, darker shades and cozy textiles to create a little bit of interest to your holiday design.

You will primarily find monochromatic color schemes throughout Scandinavian homes, however, pastels are often added sparingly to add warmth and color.  Colors that are often incorporated include mint green, soft gray and blush pink. Warm up your home with soft candle light

Scandinavians love their candle light, and with good reason.  Days are long and dark during the winter. To put it in perspective,  Niki, from My Scandinavian Home,  says “the sun rises at 10 am and sets at 1pm today (November 27, 2018) and this will diminish by 1 hour a week until winter solstice! ” To combat the darkness, Scandinavians light up every corner of their homes combat the darkness.
