3 Simple Tricks to Display Your Art Correctly

Foolproof tips for the #1 most common design mistake

So, you’ve decided on the art pieces you’d like to add on to your walls, but you aren’t ready for the next daunting task… correctly hanging the pieces. One of the most common design mistakes that are made is poorly hung artwork. If you are stressed about how to properly hang your art, then here are a few steps you need to make sure your stunning art stands out correctly.

Tip 1 | Hang Art at Eye Level

Many people tend to hang artwork too high. Make sure your artwork is at eye level. The best way to do achieve this is to make sure that the center of your artwork is 57’’ above the floor. 57’’ is used because it represents the average height of the human eye. This number is regularly used in many galleries and museums worldwide as it creates balance in the space and all of your artwork can share a proper visual midline.

Tip 2 | Balance the Scales

Make sure your collection is neither too large nor too small in relation to your furniture. Typically, the artwork should be about 2/3 the size of the piece of furniture that it is hung over. When hanging numerous pieces in a group, make sure that the heavier pieces are places in the lower left. As you move across the wall, smaller pieces should be in the upper right with mid-sized pieces places in between. If you have one large piece and a few smaller pieces, hang the large piece toward the middle as a focal point and branch out from there. Leave roughly 2-5 inches in between each frame for the best visual presence.

Also, try not to hang small work on a big wall. While the minimalist decor trend is all the rage right now, keep in mind that a small artwork on a big wall just seems awkward.

Tip 3 | Use Frames Wisely

When thinking about your focal piece of artwork, never neglect the frames. This is especially important when you are planning on putting art in the main room of a house; such as the living room or dining room. It doesn’t matter if you go with modern, wood, or monochromatic frames, just make sure you mix and match different vintage styles and picture hangers. Mixing and matching your frames will bring as much style and personality to a space as the artwork itself.

Another framing tip; do not nail your art pieces to the wall! Instead use hooks. It will cause way less damage to the wall and in case you decide to rearrange, you will have an easier time uninstalling them.

Displaying your art doesn’t have to be a stressful task. With a little research and practice you capture your personality and creativity and express yourself on your wall space like a pro.
