How To Discover Your Personal Design Aesthetic

Do you struggle to make your home feel like a reflection of you and your personal style? Transforming a house into a home can be incredibly challenging. Many of my clients struggle to showcase their personal style in their home, it is one of the most common reasons for hiring an interior designer.

However, it is incredibly important to create a home that is a reflection of you, your style, and your needs. This is what helps give you that certain, indescribable feeling when you walk through the door each day. Your home should be a reflection of you and what makes you happy.

Today, I will be sharing a few steps that you can take to help you discover your ideal design aesthetic. Defining your style will help provide a starting point for creating a home that is a true reflection of you, however at the end of the day, what is most important is selecting items for your home that give you that warm, fuzzy feeling as you bring them into your home.

1 | Get Inspired

To identify your design style, start collecting inspirational images. Use these images as a source of inspiration to help you determine what you like and don’t like about an interior.

This exercise will help you determine your style, not re-create a space through imitation. Get creative, this exercise is a terrific way to get your creative juices flowing.

Once you begin collecting images, collect with abandon. Create a Pinterest board, clip images from magazines, search Google images, take notes about what inspires you when you visit family/friends.

At this stage, don’t think about why you like an image, keep it if it appeals to you, follow your gut. In the next step, you will begin to analyze the images. But for now, collect with abandon.

3 | Make it Your own

Armed with an idea of your style., walk through your home, and complete the same step process. What do you like about your home and the items in it? What do you not like?

If you have items around your home on display that don’t resonate with you, get rid of them. It is time to create a home that you love and are comfortable in, there is no more room for items that don’t reflect you and your personality.

Now that you have your design style and inspirational images, it is time to design your space! This is the moment where an interior designer can be a huge asset.

My number one priority is to help you create a space that feels personal and authentic to you, one that you love coming home to every day.

To do this, send me your inspirational images, and together we will review your design style, sift through your notes, and images, to begin creating a space that gives you the warm fuzzies each time you walk through the door.

As a designer, we not only focus on designing spaces that give you that warm fuzzy feeling, we also take into account function, when designing an interior.  To do this, we sit down with you during a consultation to understand your needs and lifestyle.

It is so easy, especially if you are an interior design lover, to underestimate the importance of function in your home. Making function and aesthetic both primary goals will help you eliminate unnecessary expenses, worry, and mistakes in the long run.
