4 Living Room Decorating Ideas every Homeowner Should Know

The living room is the heart of the home. It’s where you enjoy family movie nights, unwind with a good book, or help your kids tackle their homework assignments. The living room is versatile, and it needs to be fitted with the proper furniture and decorative pieces. It is also an ideal way to show off your design aesthetic. Whether your goal is to simply refresh your living room or completely renovate it, make your space come alive with these 4 tips.

Furniture

Many people don’t know how to properly arrange their living room furniture. It is common for people to push a sofa against a wall and add a few other decorative items, but arranging furniture requires a little more planning.

Consider the focal point of the room. Where is the most traffic going to flow? What is the best way to prevent scraped knees? A typical rule of thumb is to give 30″ to 36″ of a walkway between large furniture pieces so that you don’t overcrowd your space. If your room is on the smaller size, then try pieces that are smaller so that everything looks proportional.

Area Rugs

Area rugs may seem daunting but are super simple if you know the right tricks. The most important consideration with any area rug is the size. Make sure your area rug is large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and all chairs to rest on top of it. An area rug that is too small will make the room look disproportioned. The furniture should sit on top of the rug and there should be about 10’’ to 20’’ of floor between the edges of the area rug and the walls of the room.

Lighting

Lighting is a complex element to incorporate. Be sure to include each of the three main types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. All light sources should be placed at different levels throughout the room. Overhead chandeliers, recessed lighting, table and floor lamps, and wall sconces are all great assets.

Television

Nobody wants a sore neck after watching their favorite show. An optimal height for the center of the screen is 30’’ above the lowest seat height in the room. Make sure to avoid hanging your TV too high on the wall. Also, the distance between TV and sofa should be about 7′’. Your eyes will be very happy, and you won’t feel like you are either in the front or back row of the movie theater.

Overall, these guidelines and rules can be broken, but these tips will give you a good foundation for your living room layout.
