Christmas garland is one of my all-time favorite holiday decorations. This year was the first year I have made my own. I was certainly surprised it was so easy to make! Below I have outlined simple step-by-step instructions so you can create your own beautiful, fresh garland this year.
As many of you know from Monday’s post, Simple and Stylish Christmas Decorating Ideas, I am a minimalist when it comes to decorating the house for Christmas.
Each year I find that I have paired down the decorations more and more. This year is no exception. I have found over the years, that I crave simplicity when it comes to Christmas decorations. Lots of fresh greenery, a few lights, nothing fancy. I feel that once again I have taken a step in the right direction toward simplifying Christmas by making my own fresh garland. This weekend, I gathered all of the pine and holly from my yard and used simple twine and floral wire to attach it. That’s it, you really cannot get anymore simple. I love it! I feel that it is the perfect complement for this house. Are you ready to learn how to make your own garland?
How to Make Your Own Christmas Garland Tutorial
HOLIDAY DIY
Supplies for your Christmas garland
- Pine or any kind of fresh greenery (Gather it from your yard or stop by your local Christmas tree farm. They often give it away free.)
- Twine
- Floral wire
- Heavy duty scissors
The process
- Collect your greenery. I filled a large wicker basket full of pine and holly from my yard.
- Measure. Simply lay the twine across the mantle, or where-ever you’re going to hang it. Do this as if it were garland draping across the mantle. I allowed it to dangle down each side about 6″ with a swag in the middle of the fireplace.
- Lay your twine on a flat work surface. I used my kitchen table.
- Grab a piece of greenery from your fresh clippings.
a. Lay the first piece of greenery out on the twine. Line up the tip of the greenery with the tail end of the twine. Wrap the tip end of the greenery and the tail end with floral wire around the piece of twine. Make Wrap the floral wire snuggly. This will secure the pine to the twine.
b. I recommend facing all of your greenery in the same direction. Tail to tip, with a small overlap of each piece. (insert photo) - Repeat.
a. Continue wrapping your pine, tip to tail, all along the twine. Overlap each piece a bit. This will make the garland seem more full. - Continue the process until you reach the end of your twine.
- Hang it.
a. I used small finishing nails to secure the garland into place on the mantle. - Decorate it.
a. Dress your garland up with lights or ornaments if you would like, or keep it simple. It is beautiful on it’s own.
