Today I am sharing my favorite DIY sugar scrub recipe. This recipe is so simple. As a matter of fact, you probably already have everything you need in your pantry to make it now. However, the reason I am most excited about sharing this recipe is that it is one of my favorite holiday gifts to give away to friends and family. Hence, I am hoping that it will come in handy to you this Christmas. Especially, if you are looking for easy holiday gifts. In addition to the recipe, your will also find at the bottom of the post, pretty holiday labels for you to download and print for each gift.
What are the health benefits of sugar scrubs?
Did you know that sugar can actually be beneficial to you? No, I’m not talking about eating mass quantities of Christmas cookies and holiday goodies. As far as I know, that is still not healthy for your body. However, sugar, when used as an exfoliant for your skin can have several health benefits. Not only can it exfoliate dead skin cells, but it is also an easy and incredibly inexpensive way to give yourself healthy, glowing skin. How you ask?
First, sugar is a natural humectant, which means it retains moisture and hydrates the skin. Second, it is a natural source of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid penetrates the skin, breaking it down. As a result, cell turnover is encouraged, which helps generate fresher, younger looking skin.
Now, back to my favorite way to use it on the skin, a homemade sugar scrub. Are you ready for the recipe?
Orange Ginger Sugar Scrub Recipe
DIY
Ingredients:
- 1 TBSP. of Ginger, chopped
- 1 tsp. of Orange peel, grated
- 1/4 cup of Coconut Oil
- 1/4 cup of cold-pressed oil (I used almond, but you can substitute jojoba, sunflower, etc.)
- 1/2 cup of Turbinado sugar
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of kosher salt
- Essential Oils (I used 2 drops of Clary Sage, Rosemary, and Grapefruit)
* Notes: For a more coarse exfoliant use 3/4 c. Turbinado sugar and eliminate 1/4 c. of brown sugar. The first recipe I used 3/4 c. Turbinado sugar. Mom felt like it was a little too abrasive for her, I prefer it to the brown sugar. It is a matter of preference. Brown sugar is softer than granulated sugar, it is good for the face and skin. Turbinado (Raw) sugar is naturally more coarse, which makes it good for the body.
Prep:
- Peel and chop the ginger and grate the orange peel. Combine ginger, orange peel and coconut oil on the stove using low heat. Continue heating for 5-10 minutes, until the orange and ginger scent has infused with the coconut oil. Remove the oil and strain it into a bowl using a cheesecloth.
- Combine the cold-pressed oil with the Orange, Ginger Coconut Oil infusion, while it is still warm.
- Let it cool to room temperature.
- After the oil has cooled mix in sugar, salt, and essential oils.
How to Use the Sugar Scrub:
Use as an exfoliate for face and body. Massage onto damp skin, allowing it to set for a couple of minutes before rinsing. Enjoy!
This sugar scrub recipe makes the perfect holiday gift.
I keep saying, this recipe makes a terrific holiday gift, because it does. The first time I made this recipe was a few Christmas’ ago. At the time, I wanted to DIY most of my Christmas gifts and I knew my mom would appreciate this hydrating sugar scrub. She loved it! She could not get over how wonderful it smelled. Afterwards, she told me that she kept the lid off in her bathroom so that fresh ginger and orange would permeate the bathroom. Surprised at how soft and smooth her skin felt, she asked me to make her a second batch after running out of the first.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for awesome DIY Christmas gifts this year, this one is a winner! Not only is it inexpensive, but sugar scrubs have so many health benefits. Make a double batch, keep some for yourself and pass the rest to friends and family this holiday season. Add the free recipe printable so they can make their own later. They will thank you.
I have even compiled a shopping guide (simply click the image below to purchase the ingredients) for you. It has all the ingredients that you need to make your sugar scrub holiday gifts.
If you’re friends and family would rather have a yummy treat this year for Christmas, make them a batch of what I call Absolutely the Best Peanut Butter fudge ever! It only takes 15 minutes and is delicious.
