How to make a Christmas tree stand out of a bucket.

I love the way a fresh Christmas tree fills the house with the smell of nature. It is one of my favorite things about the holiday season. This year, as with most Christmases, I opted for a fresh Christmas tree.
The Sunday before Thanksgiving, I loaded up Gracie, my golden retriever, and met friends’ at our local Christmas tree farm. We were on the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. I quickly found mine. The ideal tree for me is one that has just the right amount of open spaces for beautiful lights, garland, and ornaments.

After we cut the trees, I threw mine in the back of my 4Runner and headed home with Gracie. Once we got it home I easily unloaded it with one hand. This adorable Christmas tree was no fuss, a dream come true. This was by far the easiest Christmas tree hunt of my life.

The ease of the hunt inspired me to get my little tree into place fast so I could start decorating. Impatience set in and I didn’t want to take the time to crawl into the attic to grab my ugly, plastic, clunky Christmas tree stand. Instead, I reached for an antique ceramic canning crock. I threw a bit of water in it and placed the trunk of my tree in the crock. It was there that I had an AHA moment! I knew this ceramic crock would make a beautiful, unique Christmas tree stand. The next question that popped into my mind was, how do I anchor my Christmas tree in this bucket?

After a couple of minutes of research, I came up with the idea to anchor the Christmas tree using drainage rocks. I ran to Lowe’s, grabbed a bag of drainage rocks for $3, brought them home, and threw a few in the base. Next, I set the Christmas tree trunk into the bucket and filled the remaining pot with drainage rocks. This secured the trunk in place. Voila! Anchoring your Christmas tree in a bucket is that easy.

One more tip, before you set your Christmas tree in the bucket cut back the bottom limbs of the tree. This will ensure the Christmas tree trunk sits in the pot evenly.

How to make a Christmas tree stand out of a basket: Method 1

Once I got my Christmas tree settled in my ceramic crock, I decided to research how to anchor your Christmas tree in a basket? As we know Christmas trees and baskets are very popular right now. They’re all over Pinterest, you can find them at Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Hobby Lobby, blogs. Everywhere you look Christmas trees are in baskets.

Again, I did a little research. I found three ways to secure your Christmas tree in a basket. The first was the most surprising to me. This  explanation for how to anchor your Christmas tree in a basket on Liz Marie’s blog. She said, she simply uses the bottom branches of the tree to hold itself in place in the basket. Can you believe it’s that easy? I never thought a Christmas tree would be able to hold itself up by its bottom limbs.

A few tips on how to hold a Christmas tree at by its bottom limbs.

  1. Get a basket with a smaller opening at the top. This will give the branches a better chance of sitting firmly on the edge of the basket.
  2. Spread the branches evenly so the tree can hold itself up.
  3. Use a tall basket. Do not allow the trunk of the tree to sit on the floor. You want the bottom branches of the tree to hold itself in place.

That’s it! For more details on this method visit this post on Liz Marie’s beautiful blog

How to make a Christmas tree stand out of a basket: Method 2. Concrete Stand

This method is a bit more time consuming than Liz Marie’s method. However, this Christmas tree stand can be used year after year. This method is to build a DIY concrete Christmas stand using a cheap 5-gallon plastic bucket and PVC pipe.

Supplies needed to build a concrete Christmas tree stand

The Process

  1. Cut a piece of PVC piping and put it in the center of your bucket. Make sure the PVC is the right size for your tree trunk to fit inside.
  2. Next, fill the bucket with fast-drying cement. You can buy this at Lowe’s or Home Depot, any home improvement store.
  3. Once the bucket is filled, allow the cement to dry. After your cement has dried and your DIY concrete stand is ready.
  4. Simply add your Christmas tree trunk to the stand. You may have to cut back some of the bottom limbs on the Christmas tree before placing it into the stand.
  5. Now that your Christmas tree is securely in place simply set your bucket into a decorative basket, metal Bucket, or even a wooden crate.

Method 3. Christmas tree stand and basket

The final solution I found to anchor your Christmas tree in a basket is so simple. This solution does not involve cutting, heavy rocks or cement. All you will need is a Christmas tree stand that is smaller in diameter than your basket, and a decorative basket.

Supplies needed

  • Christmas tree stand that is smaller than your basket.
  • A basket that has an inside diameter as big or a little bit bigger than your Christmas tree stand.

The Process

  1. Place your Christmas tree stand in the basket.
  2. Once that step has been completed simply anchor your Christmas tree trunk in the Christmas tree stand. All finished!
